How to Choose Beauty Products Without Falling for Every Trend

A popular beauty product can look like the answer to a problem you had not noticed until the video started. Before adding it to your basket, bring the decision back to something specific: what do you need, what have you already tried, and will this fit your actual routine?

A short buying checklist can help you compare products without spending every evening researching them. It also makes it easier to leave an appealing product on the shelf when you have no clear use for it.

Write a one-sentence brief

Name the job you want the product to do. “I want a mascara that stays put during my workday and comes off with my usual remover” is useful. “I want to look transformed” gives you little to compare.

For skincare, describe the ordinary product need rather than diagnosing yourself: replacing a cleanser you dislike, finding a texture you enjoy, or buying a moisturizer that fits your budget. Persistent or worsening skin concerns deserve professional advice rather than repeated experiments with trending products.

Check your cupboard before comparing shops

Gather the products that serve the same purpose. Check labels for use instructions and any expiry or period-after-opening information. Set aside anything that should no longer be used; do not keep using an unsuitable product just to finish it.

For each unfinished purchase, note why you stopped using it. Was the scent unpleasant, the shade wrong, the packaging inconvenient, or the routine too complicated? This is more useful than assuming the next fashionable product will solve the problem.

If you already have a suitable item, decide whether you are replacing it or adding another. A duplicate may be convenient, but convenience should be an intentional choice.

Compare the details that affect everyday use

  • Purpose: does it meet your one-sentence brief?
  • Directions: how often is it used, and does it need rinsing, extra tools, or another purchase?
  • Format: will the texture, shade, scent, and packaging suit how you use it?
  • Label: can you find the ingredient list, instructions, and relevant warnings?
  • Cost: can you afford the purchase now and a replacement later?
  • Seller: are the seller’s identity, contact details, and return conditions clear?

For makeup, check a shade in suitable lighting where testing is available and hygienic. A product that looks right in someone else’s filtered video may look different on you.

Use unit price without letting it decide everything

Unit price helps compare similar products in different pack sizes. Divide the price by the amount, then multiply to a common size.

For example, a fictional 50 ml product priced at 12 costs 24 per 100 ml. A fictional 100 ml product priced at 20 costs 20 per 100 ml. The larger pack has the lower unit price, but it only saves money if you will use it and it suits you. The examples use the same currency and are not current retail prices.

A small size can be the more practical first purchase even when its unit price is higher. Different formulas are not necessarily equivalent simply because the containers have the same volume.

Read reviews for relevant experiences

Look for details that relate to your brief: wear time, shade, texture, removal, or packaging. A review saying “it is amazing” gives you less information than one explaining how it performed during an ordinary day.

Notice whether the reviewer received the product, uses an affiliate link, or is presenting an advertisement. Sponsored content can still contain useful information, but it has a commercial purpose. Compare it with other descriptions and the product label rather than treating enthusiasm as proof.

Be wary of dramatic before-and-after images without clear information about lighting, timing, other products, or editing. You do not need to investigate every claim; an unclear claim is a reasonable reason to postpone the purchase.

Use a waiting list for optional purchases

For a nonessential item, write its name, price, purpose, and what it would replace. Choose a waiting period that fits you, such as a week. At the end, ask whether you still want it for the same reason.

This pause need not apply to replacing an essential product you regularly use. Its purpose is to give a new optional purchase some distance from the excitement of a promotion or a limited-time offer.

Introduce new skincare carefully

Try one new product at a time so you can notice which change you like or dislike. For skincare, use the American Academy of Dermatology’s home-testing instructions before wider application. Home testing is different from diagnostic allergy testing performed by a clinician and cannot guarantee that a reaction will never occur.

Follow product directions and stop using a product that causes a reaction. Seek professional advice for severe or persistent symptoms, and check with your clinician before changing a prescribed routine.

Keep a brief product note

Record when you started using the product, what you wanted it to do, and whether you would buy it again. You might write: “Liked the texture; pump worked well; scent too strong for me.” Avoid changing several products at once or expecting a universal result from another person’s experience.

At the next purchase, use the note to make a more informed choice. The most useful beauty collection is one you understand, can afford, and actually use.

Before you buy

  • I can describe the product’s purpose.
  • I have checked what I already own.
  • I understand its directions and total cost.
  • I have read useful details beyond promotional claims.
  • I have a plan for introducing it into my routine.
